Building a Caring Future Using Lean – The Northumbria Way

Standardised approach to improvement process saves £700,000

Through its NETS membership, Northumbria Healthcare Foundation Trust was already familiar with Lean ways of working. A number of services had been using the methodology but had been doing so in isolation. The Transformation Team at the Trust felt that to deliver the best quality improvements possible a standard way of delivering improvement projects should be developed. The Northumbria Way standardised Lean process was developed and implemented by the Transformation Team over a 16-month period with the aims of:

• Providing a corporate process for the Trust when delivering quality/service improvements
• Empowering staff to produce improvement solutions within their areas of work
• Embedding an improvement culture Trust-wide by delivering Lean methodology training at all levels

The implementation of the Northumbria Way has allowed the Transformation Team to develop a number of improvement projects across the organisation and measurable results have been delivered.  In 2013, The Northumbria Way won the Improving Services through Training & Development category at the Lean Healthcare Awards.
